Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn, New York

Painted in 1970 by Maurice Chin, a Jamaican, a view of my Brooklyn apartment, looking from the living room into one of two bedrooms.

(Several years ago, I saw Maurice painting at the corner of Tower and King Streets in Kingston, Jamaica. We never spoke then. But in late Summer of 1969, a friend asked if he could stay at my place. After all, I had two bedrooms, was paying $59/month, and my girlfriend had just left to marry a better man. So, Maurice spent several months in my apartment and I never charged him a dime for rent. He has since made his fortune, working for the Long Island Railroad, and left town -- in the early 90s -- never to be seen or heard from again.)

I've spoken often of my apartment at Nostrand Avenue at Bergen Street in Brooklyn. It remains my most memorable abode in New York or anywhere else in the States for that matter. It is chock full of memories, most of them extremely good. Discount the two burglaries.

Wanna hear about the burglaries? Well, once upon a time I was a WWWF fanatic [World Wide Wrestling Federation for those unfamiliar with the sport.] I rushed home one night, arriving about five minutes to midnight. In those days, I let nothing stand in the way of my watching the brutality, and sometimes the beauty, that free-style wrestling represents.

So I climb the three flights of stairs, open the door and notice, immediately, that my TV is missing. I had borrowed it from my great friend, Robbie, but I didn't think for a moment that he had returned to recover it without telling me. The radio was playing since I usually left it playing so burglars would know that someone was there. When I walked to my bedroom, I noticed clothing on the floor. I knew I had been burglarized.

Not knowing whether or not the intruder was still in the apartment, I left immediately and used the public phone to call the police. About 15 minutes later, I waved down some cops who were driving by. When they accompanied me upstairs, I realized then that the radio that had been playing was now gone and the top drawer of my file cabinet was now open, thugh it was shut when I arrived the first time.

What had happened is that the robber/s broke through my window at the fire escape which led to the roof, as well as to the ground, of course. It turns out that when I arrived they had taken my stuff onto the roof and, when I went to call the police, had returned to steal even more stuff.

I installed what we call gates in New York to ensure they didn't break in. But one Sunday, six months later, I returned to my apartment late evening and immediately sat to watch television. Finally, I got up to go to bed and saw that they had broken through the other window and robbed me a second time. This time there was less stuff to be stolen since I hadn't replaced much.

Still, it is the beautiful memories that dominate. Which is the way it should be.

Tar Beach

Illus. in full color. "Ringgold recounts the dream adventure of eight-year-old Cassie Louise Lightfoot, who flies above her apartment-building rooftop, the 'tar beach' of the title, looking down on 1939 Harlem. Part autobiographical, part fictional, this allegorical tale sparkles with symbolic and historical references central to African-American culture. The spectacular artwork resonates with color and texture. Children will delight in the universal dream of mastering one's world by flying over it. A practical and stunningly beautiful book."--(starred) Horn Book.
